Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has promoted vitamin A and cod liver oil as measles treatments, but health experts warn that excessive use can lead to dangerous side effects.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends vitamin A as supportive care for children with severe measles, particularly those with deficiencies. However, medical organizations stress that such treatment should be administered only under medical supervision. The Merck Manual lists serious side effects from vitamin A overdose, including liver damage, increased intracranial pressure, skin changes, and fetal birth defects.

As of March 27, the CDC has reported 483 confirmed measles cases across 20 states—97% of them in unvaccinated individuals or those with unknown status. Texas leads in case counts and has also reported signs of vitamin A toxicity in some children.

Despite Kennedy’s claims and the framing of measles outbreaks as routine, the disease was declared eliminated in the U.S. in 2000. Experts continue to emphasize vaccination as the most effective prevention.
