Dozens of top federal health officials were ousted Tuesday under a restructuring led by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. The sweeping move affects multiple agencies, including the CDC, FDA, and NIH, with many officials reassigned to the Indian Health Service (IHS).

Those removed include Dr. Jeanne Marrazzo, head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases; Dr. Karen Hacker, CDC’s chronic disease director; Dr. Jonathan Mermin, CDC’s STD and HIV/AIDS director; and Dr. Brian King, head of the FDA’s tobacco division.

Kennedy announced the changes on X, declaring, “The revolution begins today!” Officials said staff were offered remote reassignment options or face loss of severance. Some described the move as punitive, comparing it to exile. One CDC official said, “IHS sites fill critical gaps. They aren’t an American Gulag Archipelago.”

NIH Director Dr. Jay Bhattacharya acknowledged the agency is “at a time of tremendous change.” The restructuring is part of a larger federal workforce reduction involving 10,000 job cuts, with the CDC losing 2,400 positions.
