President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for Health and Human Services (HHS) secretary, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., began meeting with Republican senators to gain support for his confirmation. Kennedy, a longtime vaccine skeptic, stated he supports the polio vaccine but has faced criticism for endorsing debunked theories linking vaccines to autism.
Kennedy plans to meet over 25 GOP senators, including Rick Scott (R-FL), Ron Johnson (R-WI), and Tim Scott (R-SC). After meeting Kennedy, Rick Scott praised his focus on transparency regarding vaccines and improving Medicare and Medicaid but did not address Kennedy’s controversial vaccine views.
Trump defended Kennedy, saying he would not pursue “radical” policies. While Trump endorsed the polio vaccine, he avoided clarifying his stance on vaccines and autism, suggesting pesticides might play a role in rising autism diagnoses.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), a polio survivor, criticized Kennedy’s petition to revoke approval for the polio vaccine, warning that undermining proven treatments is “dangerous” and could jeopardize Kennedy’s confirmation.
Kennedy also seeks bipartisan support on nutrition and chronic disease research, framing his goals around Trump’s “Make America Healthy Again” vision.
