Republican lawmakers criticized President Biden for awarding the Presidential Medal of Freedom to billionaire philanthropist George Soros and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton during a Saturday ceremony honoring 19 recipients. Other honorees included Anna Wintour, Denzel Washington, José Andrés, Bill Nye, Lionel Messi, and Magic Johnson.
GOP members took issue with Soros, a Democratic megadonor, and Clinton, the 2016 Democratic presidential nominee, receiving the honor. “Apparently, all it takes to receive the highest civilian honor from President Biden is to donate millions,” tweeted Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.). Rep. Eli Crane (R-Ariz.) commented, “Says all you need to know,” referencing Soros and Clinton’s selection over others like Daniel Penny.
Soros, a Hungarian-American of Jewish descent, has long faced criticism from conservatives. Recent filings show his nonprofit, Fund for Policy Reform, donated $60 million to a Democratic Super PAC in 2024.
Clinton, who received a standing ovation at the event, served as Secretary of State during the Obama administration. “Giving Soros the Medal of Freedom is outrageous but not surprising,” said Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.), accusing Democrats of prioritizing “criminals over cops.”
