Republicans are seizing on the fatal stabbing of Iryna Zarutska, a 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee killed on a Charlotte light rail train last month, to press their case for tougher crime policies as President Donald Trump expands his federal crackdown to more cities.

Authorities charged Decarlos Brown Jr., 34, with murder after security footage showed him attacking Zarutska from behind. Brown, diagnosed with schizophrenia, had been arrested 14 times in the past decade. GOP leaders argue Democratic policies and judicial decisions allowed him to remain free.

“It’s infuriating. It’s heartbreaking,” House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) said, adding Trump “is proving every single day in our nation’s capital” that tougher measures work. House Republicans including Steve Scalise and Tom Emmer blamed “soft-on-crime” policies and “woke judges” for the tragedy.

North Carolina Republicans demanded the removal of Magistrate Judge Teresa Stokes, who granted Brown pretrial release in January. They said her decision showed “a willful failure” of duty.

Trump himself commented, calling Brown “a mad man, a lunatic” and offering sympathy to Zarutska’s family. The case has become central to Republican arguments as viral video of the assault intensifies calls for stricter law enforcement.
