A growing number of Republican national security officials are endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris for the 2024 election, expressing concerns about the risks of reelecting Donald Trump. Over 100 former national security officials recently endorsed Harris in a letter calling Trump “unfit to serve.” This follows an op-ed by former Bush administration Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, labeling Trump “a serious threat to the rule of law,” and a letter from 10 ex-military officials supporting Harris as the only candidate fit to serve as commander-in-chief.
While some GOP strategists doubt the impact of these endorsements on voters, Harris has actively courted Republican support, launching a “Republicans for Harris” initiative. Her campaign director of Republican outreach emphasized that Harris aims to be “a president for all Americans.”
Despite skepticism, at least 150 Republicans with ties to national security have backed Harris, including many citing Trump’s affinity for authoritarian leaders as a danger to U.S. interests. Republican Voters Against Trump sees the endorsements as influential, signaling other Republicans to consider backing Harris. The trend also includes endorsements from figures linked to John McCain, Mitt Romney, and the Bush family.
