Multiple Republican lawmakers have spoken out against comments made by comedian Tony Hinchcliffe at former President Trump’s New York rally on Sunday. During the event, Hinchcliffe referred to Puerto Rico as a “floating island of garbage,” drawing a mixed reaction from the audience and sparking condemnation from GOP figures, especially those with Puerto Rican ties.

Senator Rick Scott (R-Fla.) took to X (formerly Twitter), calling the joke “not funny and not true,” and praised Puerto Ricans as “amazing people and amazing Americans.” Trump campaign senior adviser Danielle Alvarez also distanced the campaign from the comedian’s remarks, stating they did not reflect Trump’s views.

Florida Representatives Carlos A. Gimenez and Anthony D’Esposito added to the rebuke, with Gimenez calling Puerto Rico “the crown jewel of the Caribbean.” D’Esposito, who has Puerto Rican heritage, referred to Hinchcliffe’s routine as a “bad comedy set,” urging a focus on positive messaging.

In response, Hinchcliffe defended his remarks on X, claiming they were taken out of context and insisting he made fun of everyone equally during his set. He added that he vacations in Puerto Rico and criticized those he claimed misunderstood his comedic style.
