Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC), chair of the House Subcommittee on Cybersecurity, is facing scrutiny after a Wired report alleged she and her staff created burner social media accounts to enhance her online image. Former staffers claimed they were directed to post misleading content and monitor criticism on platforms like Reddit.
“We had to make multiple burner accounts,” one unnamed staffer said, noting they were directed to counter negative comments rather than serve constituents. Wired reported that Mace, known for her tech skills, personally set up accounts and coded bots for social engagement.
Mace has not denied the use of alternate accounts but responded jokingly on X, calling herself a “nerd” and saying she is “married to [her] job.” Her communications director denied being instructed to create burner accounts and praised Mace’s self-taught coding abilities.
Former strategist Wesley Donehue testified that Mace has a deep interest in programming bots and managing her digital outreach herself. However, a staffer told Wired they never actually saw her coding.
Mace’s online following has surged recently, and her controversial presence has drawn widespread attention—including from a recent public feud with her ex-fiancé.
