WASHINGTON, D.C. — A new report alleges that a senior White House staffer may be operating a large anonymous pro-Trump account on X, raising fresh questions about transparency in government messaging.
According to WIRED, the account “Johnny MAGA,” which has nearly 300,000 followers, appears to be linked to Garrett Wade, a rapid response manager in the Trump administration. The outlet reported that publicly available records tie a phone number associated with Wade to the anonymous account. A source familiar with the matter also confirmed the connection to WIRED. Wade and the White House did not respond to requests for comment.
The Johnny MAGA account has frequently amplified official White House messaging, including posts defending immigration enforcement actions and promoting President Donald Trump’s Truth Social posts. In one instance, the account boosted commentary surrounding a controversial AI-generated video involving former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama.
The report notes that the account does not disclose any affiliation with the White House while reposting official administration content. Multiple media outlets have cited the account’s posts as reflections of grassroots sentiment.
Federal Election Commission records reviewed by WIRED show Wade previously worked for Opinion Architects, a digital consulting firm owned by former Trump communications aide Taylor Budowich. The firm received funding from pro-Trump political committees during the 2024 election cycle.
Experts on disinformation told WIRED that undisclosed links between government officials and anonymous influencer accounts could blur the line between official messaging and organic political support, potentially impacting public trust. No federal rules currently require political influencers to disclose government affiliations unless paid commercial endorsements are involved.
