Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) is facing a defamation lawsuit after publicly accusing four men, including her ex-fiancé and his business partner, Brian Musgrave, of sexual abuse and voyeurism during a House floor speech in February.
The federal lawsuit, filed Friday in Charleston, S.C., argues that Mace’s allegations were false and that Musgrave’s reputation was wrongfully destroyed. The suit states, “I am not a rapist. I am not a predator. I am not a sex trafficker.” Musgrave acknowledges co-owning the South Carolina condo where Mace claimed to have found a hidden camera, but denies any involvement.
The case tests the limits of the Speech and Debate Clause, which protects lawmakers from lawsuits over official legislative actions. While Mace’s congressional remarks are protected, the lawsuit targets statements made in press releases, social media posts, and a public display of the men’s photos under a sign reading “Predators.”
Mace’s office has not yet commented on the lawsuit, which was assigned to Obama-appointed U.S. District Judge Richard Gergel.
