Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) reported being assaulted by a man at the Rayburn House Office Building on Tuesday evening. Capitol Police arrested 33-year-old Jamie McIntyre of Illinois on charges of assaulting a government official.

In a statement on X, Mace said the assailant was a “pro-trans man” and shared that she is recovering with a wrist brace and icing her arm. She added, “Your violence and threats on my life will only make me double down.”

Mace recently introduced a bill banning transgender women from using facilities on federal property that differ from their assigned sex at birth, sparking criticism and threats. Opponents, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), argue the legislation endangers all women and unfairly targets transgender individuals, including Rep.-elect Sarah McBride (D-DE).

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) has also implemented a rule requiring House bathrooms to align with users’ sex assigned at birth. Mace has vowed to continue advocating for her bill despite backlash and threats.
