Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) has intensified her critique of Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), comparing him to a Democrat, amidst her ongoing threats to remove him from his leadership position. In a conversation with CNN, Greene expressed strong opposition to Johnson’s bipartisan cooperation, particularly his role in passing a $1.2 trillion funding bill to prevent a government shutdown. She argued that the bill, which was supported by Democratic votes, did not incorporate sufficient Republican policy objectives and was rushed without allowing ample time for review.

Greene accused Johnson of betraying GOP voters by not adhering to conservative values and likened his actions to those of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and former Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), suggesting he has aligned more with Democratic approaches than Republican principles. She dismissed concerns that removing Johnson could lead to a more moderate Speaker, claiming Johnson is already as left-leaning as possible within the Republican spectrum.

Despite internal warnings to halt her campaign against Johnson, Greene remains steadfast, fueled by support she perceives from Republican voters nationally. She has criticized Johnson for his willingness to negotiate with Democrats, particularly on a Ukraine aid package, and has introduced a resolution to remove him from his position. Though she has not yet forced a vote on the matter, Greene continues to publicly oppose Johnson, indicating readiness to act against him if he proceeds with policies she opposes.

Johnson, acknowledging Greene’s dissatisfaction, defended his negotiation efforts as part of the reality of governance in a politically divided environment, emphasizing the challenges of crafting ideal legislation with a narrow majority.
