Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) is urging House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) to honor slain activist Charlie Kirk with a statue in the U.S. Capitol. Kirk, co-founder of Turning Point USA, was shot and killed Wednesday while speaking at Utah Valley University.
In a letter circulated Thursday, Luna wrote, “I owe my entire political career to Charlie Kirk. I would quite literally not be in office today if it weren’t for him.” She called for a statue to serve as “a permanent testament to his life’s work, his courage and his sacrifice.” The letter was co-signed by 15 other Republican lawmakers.
Law enforcement confirmed recovery of a rifle believed to have been used in the attack and said the FBI is offering a $100,000 reward for information leading to the suspect’s arrest. Two photos of a person of interest have been released by the FBI’s Salt Lake City field office.
In her letter, Luna described Kirk’s death as “a stark reminder of the escalating political violence fueled by the divisive and hateful rhetoric from the Left.” She also praised Kirk’s Christian faith, writing, “He loved Jesus Christ with his whole heart, and it was that love that gave him the courage to stand strong in the face of hostility.”
