Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) stated on CNN’s State of the Union that he has seen no “proof” the FBI is politically biased against Republicans, countering claims made by some supporters of President-elect Donald Trump. Raskin’s remarks follow Trump’s announcement of Kash Patel as the incoming FBI Director. Patel, a controversial figure and former Defense Department chief of staff under Trump, has drawn mixed reactions.
Raskin acknowledged the FBI’s historical misuse, citing its weaponization during the civil rights era but argued the current Department of Justice is impartial, pointing to federal charges against Democrats like Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) for bribery and Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX) for money laundering and acting as a foreign agent.
He dismissed the “deep state” narrative as undefined rhetoric, claiming it reflects frustration when legal action doesn’t favor Trump’s interests. Patel is set to replace Christopher Wray, who has served since 2017.
