House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) issued a policy barring transgender individuals from using single-sex bathrooms in the Capitol building, citing legislation introduced by Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC). Rep.-elect Sarah McBride (D-DE) called the move a distraction, saying it shifts focus from policies harming American workers, such as privatizing Social Security and Medicare.
Speaking on CBS News’s Face the Nation, McBride emphasized that targeting transgender people diverts resources from addressing constituents’ economic concerns, including the rising cost of living. She argued such measures undermine progress and exploit public discourse on transgender rights.
The policy, enforceable by the House sergeant-at-arms, remains vague on implementation. Meanwhile, Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) offered McBride access to his office bathroom. McBride stated she would comply with the policy and focus on reducing costs for families.
