Rep. Dusty Johnson (R-S.D.) plans to introduce the Panama Canal Repurchase Act, authorizing President-elect Trump to negotiate reacquiring the canal from Panama. Johnson supports Trump’s push, citing concerns over China’s influence near the canal. The bill directs the president and Secretary of State to initiate talks and requires a report to Congress on progress within 180 days.

The proposal stems from Trump’s criticism of the 1977 Carter-Torrijos Treaties, which transferred the canal to Panama. Trump has referred to the deal as a mistake, alleging China now controls the canal. An early draft of Johnson’s bill suggested a symbolic $1 reacquisition cost.

At a press conference, Trump declined to rule out military action to regain control, calling the canal “vital” to U.S. interests. However, skepticism remains among Republicans, with Senate Armed Services Chair Roger Wicker calling Trump’s ambitions “aspirational.” Fox News first reported Johnson’s plans.
