Rep. Brandon Gill (R-Texas) is circulating a petition urging the deportation of Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), arguing she prioritizes undocumented Somali immigrants over U.S. interests.
Omar, who fled Somalia’s civil war and became a U.S. citizen in 2000, has long been a Republican target due to her vocal criticism of former President Trump. In an email first reported by Axios, Gill wrote, “We should have never let Ilhan Omar into our country,” and accused her of helping undocumented Somali immigrants evade deportation.
Several Democrats condemned Gill’s remarks. Rep. Mark Pocan (D-Wisc.) demanded Speaker Mike Johnson address the issue, calling it “demeaning & embarrassing.” Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) labeled the petition “disgusting,” arguing it was a fundraising ploy based on xenophobia.
Omar has not publicly responded to the petition.
