Rep. Al Green (D-Texas) was escorted out of the House chamber Tuesday after interrupting President Trump’s address to a joint session of Congress. Green objected to Trump’s claim that his 2024 election victory was a historic mandate, stating, “You have no mandate to cut Medicaid.”
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) repeatedly warned Green to stop speaking and maintain decorum, but the congressman refused to sit down. Johnson then ordered the sergeant-at-arms to remove him, prompting Republicans to chant “Get out” and sing “Hey, hey, hey, goodbye.”
After his removal, Green defended his actions, saying many Americans fear Medicaid cuts under the House GOP budget, which proposes $880 billion in spending reductions. He argued that Trump uses incivility to silence opposition and vowed to accept any punishment.
Trump has denied plans to cut Medicaid, Medicare, or Social Security, but critics argue the proposed budget makes cuts unavoidable.
