A new Gallup poll released Friday found that 62% of Americans believe the federal government wields too much power — the highest level since the survey began in 2001. The figure marks a sharp increase from 51% in 2024.

The shift is largely driven by Democrats, 66% of whom now say Washington holds excessive power, up from just 25% last year. The change coincides with President Donald Trump’s return to the White House. Republicans, by contrast, showed a modest decline, with 58% expressing the same view — down from 75% in 2024.

This year marks the first time since 2007 that Democrats have been more likely than Republicans to say the federal government has too much power. Historically, Gallup notes, the sentiment tends to rise among whichever party is out of power.

The poll also found that 34% of Democrats and 74% of Republicans think the government is doing too much that should be left to individuals or businesses. A separate Pew Research Center survey recently found that a majority of Americans view Trump as exercising more power than his predecessors.
