Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) denounced a pending TikTok ban, calling it a First Amendment violation based on unproven accusations. This follows the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the law requiring TikTok’s China-based parent company, ByteDance, to divest ownership or face a ban.
“One hundred seventy million Americans express themselves on TikTok daily. It’s wrong for the government to ban it,” Paul said Friday, expressing disappointment in the ruling.
The Biden administration signed the bipartisan bill last year, giving ByteDance 270 days to comply, a deadline expiring January 19. President-elect Trump is expected to weigh TikTok’s future upon taking office Monday.
While TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew plans to attend the inauguration, other Republicans, like Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.), have supported the ban, citing national security concerns over alleged data sharing with China.
