Atlanta, Georgia — Federal authorities seized hundreds of boxes of 2020 election ballots and records this week from a Fulton County elections warehouse, an action that quickly escalated into controversy after Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard was seen on site despite having no direct role in election administration or federal law enforcement.
The FBI executed a sealed search warrant at the county’s election hub in Union City, removing ballots, tabulator tapes, electronic ballot images, and voter rolls from the 2020 general election. County officials said they were not informed of the purpose of the search, and requests to retain copies of the materials were denied. The Justice Department has not explained why the warrant remains sealed or why the case appears to be led by a U.S. attorney based outside Georgia.
Gabbard’s presence drew sharp criticism from Democratic lawmakers, who warned that inserting the intelligence community into a domestic election dispute risks politicizing agencies meant to remain nonpartisan. Sen. Mark Warner said that if Gabbard believed foreign interference was involved, she would be legally obligated to brief Congress. Otherwise, he warned, the appearance suggested a political stunt.
The search revived claims of election misconduct in Fulton County, despite nearly six years of audits, court rulings, recounts, and independent monitoring that have consistently found no evidence of widespread fraud capable of altering the 2020 outcome. Even prior state oversight reviews documented administrative issues but explicitly found no illegality.
Republicans defended the operation as lawful, citing judicial authorization, while critics argued the optics reinforce long-discredited allegations that continue to undermine public trust in elections.
