Puerto Rico’s Republican Governor Jenniffer González-Colón has called out Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro for threatening the U.S. territory with a military invasion. In a letter to President-elect Trump, she labeled Maduro’s remarks as a direct challenge to U.S. national security.
Maduro, speaking at a Caracas event, invoked Simón Bolívar’s legacy, claiming Puerto Rico’s “liberation” could involve Brazilian troops. These comments follow Maduro’s controversial third term and allegations of election fraud.
Puerto Rican voters, meanwhile, have repeatedly favored U.S. citizenship and stronger ties with the U.S., with 70% in a November plebiscite choosing statehood or free association. Maduro’s threats come amid Trump’s rhetoric on territorial expansion and global tensions involving China and Russia.
Rep. Mario Díaz-Balart (R-Fla.) criticized the Biden administration’s foreign policy, warning Maduro of consequences under the incoming administration.
