A Yahoo News/YouGov poll reveals 54% of Americans support a law preserving abortion rights under Roe v. Wade. This is the highest level since the Supreme Court overturned Roe in 2022, allowing states to restrict abortion. Only 30% oppose such a law.

The poll, conducted from April 11 to 15, shows political risks for Republicans pushing for state bans. Since Roe’s overturn, 14 states have banned abortion entirely, and seven more have imposed restrictions.

Arizona recently reinstated an 1864 law banning all abortions, except to save the woman’s life. After learning about the ban, 57% of Americans opposed it, while 25% supported it. Similarly, 56% opposed other states passing similar bans.

In the potential 2024 Trump-Biden rematch, Biden’s stance of restoring Roe v. Wade protections nationwide is more popular. Trump, who said he would leave abortion laws to individual states, is seen as having a more extreme view on abortion by 41% of voters compared to 38% for Biden. More voters oppose a 15-week national abortion ban and candidates who want to ban most abortions legal under Roe. The poll suggests that voters prefer keeping abortions legal in their states.
