DORAL, Florida — Former Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio posted a photo Saturday showing himself with Secretary of State Marco Rubio during the inaugural “Shield of the Americas” summit in Florida, drawing attention online due to Tarrio’s past role in the far-right group. Tarrio shared the image on X with the caption praising Rubio and including a Spanish phrase opposing communism.
The photo was taken at the summit in Doral, where U.S. officials and Latin American leaders gathered to discuss regional security cooperation. The event focused on efforts to combat criminal cartels, foreign interference, and illegal immigration in the Western Hemisphere.
Tarrio previously served as national chairman of the Proud Boys from 2018 to 2021. In 2023 he was sentenced to 22 years in prison for seditious conspiracy tied to the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol. President Donald Trump later pardoned Tarrio and other individuals convicted in connection with the riot.
The “Shield of the Americas” initiative was announced as a new security coalition involving several countries in the region. During the summit, Trump said the alliance would coordinate strategies to counter organized crime and narcotics trafficking across the hemisphere.
The summit followed an announcement that Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem would serve as a special envoy to the initiative as the administration works to build support among regional partners.
