Adelita Grijalva won Tuesday’s special election in Arizona’s 7th Congressional District, succeeding her late father, Rep. Raúl Grijalva (D-Ariz.), who died in March. She defeated Republican Daniel Butierez to secure the southern border seat, which includes part of Tucson.

Her victory also gives House members enough support to force a vote on releasing Jeffrey Epstein files. Reps. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) and Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) had secured nearly all needed signatures for their discharge petition, with Grijalva’s expected to provide the decisive one.

Grijalva, a longtime local leader and progressive, is expected to carry forward her father’s political legacy. She campaigned on affordable housing, environmental protection, and climate resiliency, with endorsements from Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.).

Meanwhile, in Georgia, Republican Jason Dickerson held onto a GOP-leaning state Senate seat, defeating Democrat Debra Shigley. Still, Democrats highlighted Shigley’s stronger-than-expected performance in a district that Trump carried by 34 points in 2020.
