Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker (D) criticized Donald Trump on Friday after the president suggested Chicago could be the next target of federal intervention following Washington, D.C. Pritzker accused Trump and Republicans of creating “chaos” to distract from economic and social policies, pointing to tariffs and cuts to healthcare programs.

“After using Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. as his testing ground for authoritarian overreach, Trump is now openly flirting with the idea of taking over other states and cities,” Pritzker wrote on X. He added that crime in Chicago is down, with homicides dropping more than 30 percent in the last year.

Trump told reporters Friday that Chicago “will be our next one after this,” calling the city’s mayor “grossly incompetent.” In response, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson (D) said no formal notice had been received and warned that an “unlawful deployment” of National Guard troops would harm public safety.

The comments mirror disputes in D.C., where city officials argue crime is at a historic low, while federal officials have questioned those statistics.
