Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker and California Gov. Gavin Newsom warned they may withdraw from the National Governors Association (NGA) unless it condemns President Donald Trump’s decision to deploy National Guard troops to their states without consent. Both governors called the move an attack on state sovereignty and a dangerous precedent for federal overreach.
“This is precisely the federal and interstate overreach we warned against,” Pritzker wrote to NGA Chair Kevin Stitt (R-Okla.), adding that silence from the organization would force Illinois to withdraw. Newsom echoed that position, urging fellow governors to “denounce this infringement of state sovereignty.”
The Trump administration has ordered troop deployments to Illinois, California, and Oregon to “crack down on crime.” Democratic officials argue the action is unconstitutional and have filed lawsuits to block it.
Meanwhile, White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller criticized a federal judge’s order halting troop deployments to Oregon, calling it a “violation of constitutional order.”
