If President Trump imposes a 10% tariff on all Chinese goods, consumer products like cellphones, televisions, and computers could see price increases. Communications equipment, including cellphones, accounted for the largest share of U.S. imports from China last year, followed by computers and toys.
Jason Miller, a supply chain expert at Michigan State University, suggests that not the entire 10% tariff will be passed down to consumers. For example, toys might only see a 3-4% price increase due to extensive margins at retail and wholesale levels. However, Miller warns that prices could rise quickly as retailers move these goods at a fast pace. The U.S. imported $401 billion worth of goods from China last year, excluding December.
