Pope Francis condemned the Trump administration’s plan for mass deportations, calling it “a major crisis” in a letter to U.S. Catholic bishops. He urged Catholics to reject policies that equate migrants’ illegal status with criminality, arguing that deportations strip people of dignity and leave families vulnerable.
The letter also appeared to counter Vice President JD Vance’s claim that people should prioritize caring for their families and communities before helping others. Francis instead emphasized universal fraternity and love without exception.
Vance, a Catholic, has also faced criticism from New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan. After Vance accused the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops of resettling immigrants for federal funding, Dolan called the remarks “scurrilous” and insisted the Church loses money providing aid.
