A new Scripps News/Ipsos poll shows that 52% of Americans support mass deportation of undocumented immigrants, including 85% of Republicans and 54% of independents. However, support drops significantly when potential consequences are considered.
If deportations result in family separations, approval falls to 38%, with only 40% of independents and 10% of Democrats remaining supportive. Economic impacts, such as higher prices on goods, also reduce support to 43%. Smaller declines are seen with potential reductions in Social Security contributions (48%) and labor market impacts (47%).
The poll highlights the gap between theoretical approval and practical implications of mass deportation policies, reflecting a complex public stance on immigration enforcement.
