Vice President Kamala Harris is running closer to former President Donald Trump than President Joe Biden, according to a new CNN poll released Tuesday. The poll found that 45 percent of registered voters support Harris in a hypothetical match-up against Trump, who garnered 47 percent support, with 5 percent choosing someone else.
In contrast, Biden trails Trump by 6 points, with Trump at 49 percent and Biden at 43 percent. An additional 4 percent of respondents indicated they would vote for someone else.
The poll was conducted following Biden’s shaky debate performance, raising concerns within the Democratic Party about his viability as a candidate. Representative Lloyd Doggett (D-Texas) publicly called for Biden to step aside, and several editorial boards have echoed this sentiment.
Harris has been thrust into the spotlight, with some suggesting she should replace Biden on the ticket. Former Representative Tim Ryan (D-Ohio) advocated for Harris, saying she would “destroy Trump in debate.”
Despite these concerns, Biden’s campaign maintains he is the best candidate to defeat Trump. The campaign has downplayed the debate’s impact, emphasizing that Biden remains in the race.
The poll also revealed that 75 percent of registered voters believe Democrats would have a better chance of winning the White House with a different candidate, including 56 percent of Democrats and Democrat-leaning independents.
The poll surveyed 1,274 respondents between June 28 and 30, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
