WASHINGTON, D.C. — A new Politico/Public First poll shows a notable shift among President Donald Trump’s own supporters, with some beginning to hold him responsible for persistent high prices and the affordability crisis. According to the survey, 37% of Trump voters said the cost of living is “the worst” they can remember — a view shared by 53% of Harris voters. Meanwhile, 25% of Trump supporters said the president is mostly or entirely to blame for rising costs.

The White House rejected that conclusion, saying that Americans should be faulting President Joe Biden for “economic disaster.” Spokesperson Kush Desai said Trump has been focused on “cleaning up” Biden-era problems and insisted that “the best is yet to come.”

But the president’s own public comments may undermine that message. During a Cabinet meeting Tuesday, Trump dismissed affordability concerns as a “scam” and “con-job,” claiming the term “doesn’t mean anything to anybody.”

The findings highlight growing frustration within the electorate as prices for essentials — including food, housing and utilities — remain historically high. The poll suggests that a meaningful share of Trump’s base is losing confidence that he is addressing the issue quickly enough.

The White House maintains that Trump’s economic plan is still being rolled out. Voters, however, appear increasingly eager for relief as household budgets remain strained.
