A new Harvard CAPS-Harris poll reveals that 63% of voters believe the U.S. economy is on the wrong track, while 30% think it’s on the right track. Opinions were divided along party lines: 54% of Democrats felt the economy was improving, compared to only 9% of Republicans and 23% of independents. Poll co-director Mark Penn highlighted continued dissatisfaction with the economy during President Biden’s term.
The poll also showed 62% of respondents rated the economy as weak, and 48% said their personal financial situation was worsening. Despite job gains in August, former President Trump continues to criticize the Biden administration’s handling of the economy. Meanwhile, the Federal Reserve is expected to lower interest rates after over a year of keeping them at a 23-year high.
The survey, conducted from Sept. 4-5 with 2,358 registered voters, has a margin of error of 2.1%.
