A recent AP-NORC poll reveals that 7 in 10 Americans think Supreme Court justices are more influenced by their ideology than acting as neutral government arbiters. This sentiment underscores declining trust in the Court, which faces decisions on major cases involving former President Donald Trump and other divisive issues. The poll found that only about 3 in 10 believe the justices provide an independent check on other government branches.
This perception has grown over the past decade, with confidence in the Court waning. Four in 10 adults now say they have little trust in the Supreme Court, a sentiment echoed by both Republicans and Democrats. The conservative majority, with justices appointed by Republican presidents, has made significant rulings on abortion and gun policy, but Republicans remain divided on the justices’ impartiality.
Recent controversies, such as undisclosed gifts received by Justice Clarence Thomas, have further eroded confidence. Democrats and independents are particularly skeptical, with many believing the Court is used to influence the political environment. The poll reflects broad concerns about the Court’s role and integrity in the current political climate.
