A new Gallup survey released Tuesday shows Americans still view the Republican Party as more capable of protecting the United States and maintaining prosperity—but that confidence has weakened over the past year.
According to the poll, 48 percent of respondents said the GOP is better at keeping the nation secure, compared to 41 percent who favor Democrats. That margin is down from 57 percent in 2022 and 2023 and 54 percent in 2024. When asked about prosperity, 43 percent said Republicans were more capable, while 47 percent chose Democrats—a reversal from a year earlier, when Republicans led by seven points.
Gallup found that Americans now give Democrats a slight two-point edge, 40 to 38 percent, on addressing the country’s most important issues. Pollsters noted that both major parties remain broadly unpopular, with only 40 percent viewing Republicans and 37 percent viewing Democrats favorably.
The poll also aligns with a Reuters /Ipsos survey showing 50 percent of Americans blame congressional Republicans for the ongoing government shutdown, while 47 percent blame Democrats. President Trump’s approval rose slightly to 42 percent from 40 percent last month.
Gallup conducted its survey from Sept. 2–16 among 1,000 U.S. adults, with a margin of error of ±4 percentage points.
