The Democratic Party’s approval rating dropped to 40%, according to a new Harvard CAPS/Harris Poll, reflecting continued fallout from its November election losses. Only 72% of Democrats and 29% of independents approve of the party, while 60% of all respondents disapprove — up from 58% in June.
By contrast, the Republican Party received a 48% approval rating, with 85% of Republicans and 38% of independents approving. However, the GOP still holds a 52% disapproval rating.
The poll suggests Democrats are struggling to rebuild their national image despite gaining traction by opposing Republican-led Medicaid cuts. Analyst Mark Penn noted Democrats are “throwing jabs” at Republicans but failing to improve their own standing.
The poll also found only 40% of voters believe the country is on the right track and just 38% believe the economy is moving in the right direction, offering potential openings for Democrats ahead of the midterms.
