A new poll from the University of North Florida shows that 38% of Florida Republicans support an amendment that would enshrine abortion rights in the state constitution until the point of fetal viability, typically around 24 weeks. This comes despite 59% of Republicans agreeing with the Supreme Court’s 2022 decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.
Florida voters will soon decide on the amendment, which has drawn cross-party support, including from 24% of those identifying as “pro-life.” Interestingly, 21% of Republicans who agree with the decision to overturn Roe also plan to vote for the amendment.
Former President Donald Trump, a Florida resident, opposes the amendment and criticized the state’s six-week abortion ban as too strict. He also falsely claimed some states allow infanticide, though such practices are illegal everywhere in the U.S.
The poll surveyed 977 likely voters from October 7 to 18 and has a margin of error of 3.78%.
