A new Marquette University Law School poll found 70% of Americans oppose impeaching federal judges who blocked President Trump‘s efforts to cut spending and shut down agencies. Only 30% support such impeachment efforts.
The poll follows recent moves by three House Republicans to impeach federal judges over rulings that halted parts of Trump’s agenda. Rep. Andrew Clyde (R-Ga.) introduced articles of impeachment against U.S. District Chief Judge John McConnell, who blocked a federal spending freeze. Rep. Andy Ogles (R-Tenn.) filed articles targeting Judge Theodore Chuang, who stopped Elon Musk‘s plans to dismantle the U.S. Agency for International Development. Rep. Brandon Gill (R-Texas) introduced a resolution against Judge James Boasberg, who blocked the use of the Alien Enemies Act to deport Venezuelan migrants.
Impeachment is seen as unlikely in Congress, with Republican skepticism in the House and a two-thirds Senate threshold requiring support from 14 Democrats.
The poll also found 65% oppose eliminating the Department of Education, a move Trump advanced in a recent executive order.
