Nearly 60% of Americans disapprove of President Trump’s handling of tariffs and trade negotiations, according to a new AP-NORC poll released Monday. The findings come two months into Trump’s second term, as trade tensions escalate with Canada, Mexico, and China.
Only 38% of respondents said they support Trump’s approach to trade, and just 40% approve of his overall economic policy. In contrast, half expressed approval of his immigration efforts, including mass deportations and broader crackdowns on both legal and illegal immigration.
While Republicans were generally more supportive, dissatisfaction is growing among them too — 30% of GOP respondents said they disapprove of Trump’s trade policies.
Trump has imposed 25% tariffs on most imports from Canada and Mexico and raised tariffs on Chinese goods from 10% to 20%. A 25% tax on automobile imports is set to begin this week, with more reciprocal tariffs planned.
Despite market slumps and falling consumer confidence, Trump insists his policies will deliver long-term economic growth.
