A new Axios–Generation Lab poll finds most U.S. college students now view socialism more positively than capitalism, underscoring shifting generational attitudes toward the economy and government.

According to the survey, 67% of respondents said they have a positive or neutral view of socialism, while only 40% said the same about capitalism. Among students, 34% described their view of socialism as somewhat or very positive, compared with 17% for capitalism. Negative views of capitalism outnumbered those of socialism by more than two to one.

The findings come days before New York City’s mayoral election, where democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani is a leading candidate, highlighting the appeal of left-leaning ideas among younger voters. Rising costs of living, healthcare, and housing, along with political influence from billionaires, were cited as factors driving disillusionment with capitalism.

Partisan differences were sharp: 47% of Democrats and 31% of independents viewed socialism positively, compared with just 5% of Republicans. College voters also showed strong concern over economic pressures, with 74% saying they worry about affordability of necessities like rent and food.

The poll surveyed 1,574 students nationwide from Oct. 22–28, with a margin of error of ±2.5%.
