Nearly two-thirds of Americans believe President Trump’s so-called “big, beautiful bill” primarily benefits wealthy individuals, according to a new AP-NORC poll. That includes 48% of Republicans, 60% of independents, and 83% of Democrats.
The bill extends many 2017 Trump-era tax cuts and introduces sweeping reductions to welfare programs. Sixty-one percent of Americans think the bill will harm low-income people, including 90% of Democrats but fewer than one-third of Republicans.
The cuts to Medicaid and SNAP won’t begin until 2028, though new work requirements could start by 2026. Critics, including many economists, also warn of the bill’s impact on the national debt.
Approval of Trump’s handling of spending has dropped to 38%, down from 46% in March. The poll, conducted July 10–14 among 1,437 adults, has a 3.6-point margin of error.
