A new KFF poll released Friday found that a vast majority of Americans—including Trump voters, Republicans, and rural residents—oppose cuts to Medicaid funding.
More than 80% of respondents said Medicaid funding should either increase or remain the same, including 77% of rural residents and two-thirds of rural Republicans. Even among self-identified Republicans, only 33% supported Medicaid cuts, while just 35% of Trump voters backed reductions.
The findings highlight a political challenge for congressional Republicans, who are considering deep spending cuts to help fund Trump’s agenda, including tax cut extensions. The House GOP budget resolution calls for $880 billion in Medicaid cuts, but a Congressional Budget Office report found such savings are impossible without reducing benefits.
Although 60% of Americans support work requirements for Medicaid, that support drops significantly when people learn that most Medicaid recipients already work.
KFF President Drew Altman said Medicaid is now “up there with Social Security and Medicare” on the public’s “do not-cut list.”
