A new Economist/YouGov poll shows 40% of Americans believe the U.S. is in a recession, an increase from 30% in February. Another 35% say it’s not, while 25% are unsure. Despite economic growth, perceptions of recession persist across party lines.

Among Democrats, 56% say the U.S. is in recession, up sharply from 27% before President Trump’s January swearing-in. Just 26% of Republicans now hold that view, down from 51% under Biden.

Inflation remains the top issue, with 81% saying it’s “very important” and 96% reporting personal impact. Nearly half expect it to worsen within six months, while 44% foresee higher gas prices.

A separate Gallup poll found 46% blame Trump for the current economy, while 27% blame Biden. Trump’s approval rating stands at 42%, with 52% disapproving of his job performance.

The survey, conducted May 2–5 among 1,850 adults, has a margin of error of ±3.5%.
