The Fraternal Order of Police and the International Association of Chiefs of Police criticized President Trump’s sweeping pardon of Jan. 6 rioters, stating it undermines accountability and dishonors law enforcement sacrifices.

In a joint statement, the organizations said, “Allowing those convicted of these crimes to be released early diminishes accountability and devalues the sacrifices made by courageous law enforcement officers and their families.” They warned that such actions could embolden others to commit violence against police.

Trump’s executive order, signed on his first day back in office, granted unconditional pardons to over 1,500 Jan. 6 defendants, including leaders of extremist groups Proud Boys and Oath Keepers convicted of seditious conspiracy. The pardons have drawn sharp criticism from law enforcement advocates but no comment yet from Trump’s representatives.
