The city you live in should feel like home-a place where you can comfortably go about your day and feel safe. However, safety levels vary across large U.S. cities. A recent study by SmartAsset evaluated 50 of the largest cities based on factors such as violent crime rate, property crime rate, vehicular mortality rate, and other metrics to identify the safest cities.

Topping the list is San Jose, California, which ranked in the top 10 for every metric studied. It had the third lowest violent crime rate and the fifth lowest property crime rate relative to its population. Los Angeles, also in California, ranked second and had a notably lower vehicular mortality rate compared to San Jose.

Three Texas cities made the top 10: Fort Worth (3rd), Arlington (7th), and El Paso (8th). These cities reported lower rates of excessive adult drinking compared to most other top-ranked cities.

The top 10 safest cities are:

  1. San Jose, CA
  2. Los Angeles, CA
  3. Fort Worth, TX
  4. Omaha, NE
  5. Virginia Beach, VA
  6. Las Vegas, NV
  7. Arlington, TX
  8. El Paso, TX
  9. Charlotte, NC
  10. Raleigh, NC

At the other end, Memphis, Tennessee, was ranked the least safe large city, followed by Albuquerque and Detroit.
