Planned Parenthood announced plans to sue the Trump administration over a provision in the newly passed “big, beautiful bill” that would bar Medicaid reimbursements to clinics providing elective abortions.
The bill defunds any abortion provider receiving more than $800,000 in federal grants or reimbursements. Originally set for 10 years, Senate Republicans shortened the defunding window to one year.
Planned Parenthood President Alexis McGill Johnson said Thursday the measure is a “targeted attack” on both clinics and patients. “We’ll be suing the Trump administration to stop this unlawful attack,” she stated.
The group warned nearly 200 clinics across 24 states could close, affecting more than 1.1 million patients who rely on them for services including contraception, cancer screenings, STI care, and abortion.
This legal challenge comes shortly after the Supreme Court allowed states to exclude abortion providers from their Medicaid programs.
President Trump is expected to sign the bill into law Friday.
