The Defense Department plans to cut 50,000 to 60,000 civilian jobs, with 21,000 workers already set to leave under a voluntary resignation plan, a senior defense official confirmed Tuesday.
The reductions are part of President Donald Trump’s effort to shrink the federal workforce, led by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Officials aim to cut 6,000 jobs per month by not replacing departing workers.
A major concern is that service members may be forced to fill civilian roles, which could impact military readiness. The Pentagon insists it will ensure essential positions remain staffed.
The cuts will be implemented through:
- Voluntary resignations
- Job eliminations due to attrition
- Firing probationary employees (currently on hold due to court challenges)
While some military veterans will lose their jobs, officials did not provide an estimate. The Pentagon maintains that military readiness won’t suffer, despite concerns about reduced support roles.
