The Pentagon is set to send two flights of migrants to Guantanamo Bay this weekend, marking the first step in President Donald Trump’s plan to use the military base as a detainment facility, according to defense officials.

Trump’s executive order, issued Wednesday, directs the Pentagon and the Department of Homeland Security to utilize the base for migrant detention. Officials are finalizing plans to house up to 30,000 people—far exceeding the 780 detainees held there during the peak of the war on terror.

So far, the military has flown eight deportation flights to Guatemala, Honduras, and Ecuador. A separate plane is scheduled for Peru. Guantanamo will serve as a transit hub for deportees, though logistical and legal challenges remain.

Tom Homan, Trump’s border czar, said ICE would oversee an expanded facility at the base, but details are still unclear.
