Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has directed U.S. Cyber Command to halt planning for offensive operations against Russia, multiple U.S. officials confirmed.

The reason and duration of the pause remain unclear, but the directive follows President Donald Trump’s push to negotiate an end to the Russia-Ukraine war and comes just days after his heated exchange with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office.

A senior defense official declined to comment on the decision, citing operational security concerns, but emphasized that “the safety of the Warfighter in all operations, including the cyber domain,” is Secretary Hegseth’s top priority.

Lawmakers expressed skepticism about the move. Rep. Mike Turner (R-Ohio), a member of the House Armed Services Committee, questioned the report, saying, “I don’t believe that would be an accurate statement.” National Security Adviser Mike Waltz also denied discussions of pausing cyber operations against Russia, stating, “That has not been part of our discussions.”
