The Pentagon has ended a Biden-era policy that covered travel costs for service members and dependents seeking abortions or other reproductive care across state lines. The change, effective Tuesday, was announced in a Defense Travel Management Office memo.
The original policy, implemented in early 2023, aimed to ensure access to reproductive care for troops stationed in states with abortion restrictions. Critics, including Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.), argued it violated the Hyde Amendment, which bars federal abortion funding except in cases of rape, incest, or life endangerment.
Trump’s recent executive order, Enforcing the Hyde Amendment, prompted the Pentagon’s decision. Democratic lawmakers, led by Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), condemned the move, warning it undermines military readiness and could worsen recruitment challenges, especially among women, who make up 17% of the armed forces.
